Edmund Hewertson (Chief Flying Instructor)

Ed started flying back in 1991, doing a PPL at Biggin Hill. Whilst there he joined a syndicate which owned and operated a Rockwell Commander and spent a couple of hundred hours blasting his way across Europe!

In between such indulgences, he went on to add Night, IMC, and multi ratings to his PPL. Realising that he was getting limited by weather Ed went to Oxford Aviation at Kidlington and added a BCPL, then CPL with multi engine Instrument Rating and finally passing the ATPL writtens in 1995. To complete his "education", Ed attended an MCC course, Jet Orientation and 45 hours of Boeing 737 Line Orientated Flight Training (LOFT).

Then came the "wilderness years" between 1996 and 2003 as Ed was forced to try and make a proper living to pay for all the flying from the last five years!! In early 2003 an opportunity arose to get back into flying and Ed grabbed it with both hands. Renewing all his licences he then went to Old Sarum and added a JAA Instructors Rating and joined the instructional staff at Aero School Kemble in January 2005.

By January 2006 Ed was appointed Chief Flying Instructor and by the following September had bought out the club from the previous owner. Ed's "day job" is as Managing Director of PropStar Aviation a co-located business which launched an innovative Aircraft Fractional Ownership Programme from Kemble in 2007.

Capt. Graham Stokes (Resident Examiner)

Graham brings an enormous amount of aviation experience and knowledge to "The Flying Club". Having been an instructor at Wycombe Air Park, followed by a stint as an Air Taxi Pilot, flying the venerable Piper Aztec, Graham went on to fly Boeing 747s for Cathay Pacific and then British Airways. At BA Graham became a Captain on the Boeing 737 and rose up through the ranks to become a respected Training Captain and Examiner. In addition he sat on the Pilot's selection panel making many a young wannabe pilot justify his or her existence.

Having achieved all his airline goals Graham has more recently joined the Civil Aviation Authority as a Senior Flight Inspector, ensuring that Public Transport Operations maintain the highest standards possible.  In addition Graham has recently been signed off as a PPL, IMC and Radio Examiner and therefore provides these valuable skills for the club.

Bob Hopper -  Head of Training (PPL & IMC Instructor, Ground Examiner)

Bob has been flying for The Flying Club Kemble for over three years as an instructor and remains one of our most popular figures. A Chartered Engineer, he spent many years working in the motor industry while instructing at weekends. In May 2006 Bob retired from the motor industry to concentrate on flying instruction full-time.  He enjoys nothing better than putting new pilots through their paces and giving of his time for our students.

Bob also has a strong following of IMC students who are all enjoying the challenges of learning to fly on instruments "properly".

Capt John Warman (PPL Instructor)

John is an incredibly experienced aviator having accumulated over 20,000 hours flying since joining the Royal Air Force as a navigator in 1967.  He then gained a CPL at Oxford and flew Britannias (one of the remaining few is sitting on the south side of the runway here at Kemble) and DC8s before joing Gulf Air on the L1011 Tristar in 1980.

After 17 years in the Middle East as an instructor and examiner on the Tristar and A320, John returned to the UK and joined Cathay Pacific Cargo where he was a senior training captain and examiner on the 747 Classic.

Since retiring from Cathay Pacific John has joined the PropStar Group as Chief Pilot  and is also available as an instructor for The Flying Club Kemble. John finds just enough time to put the fun back into flying with a Jodel taildragger from Oaksey Park, in which he has a share.

Robert McPhee (PPL Instructor)

Bob started flying back in 1990, doing a PPL at Redhill under the RAF flying scholarship scheme. After several years on the ground including a 3 year stint at university and 3 years building power stations in various places around the world (including France and China) he revalidated his class rating in 1995 shortly before joining the Royal Air Force as a pilot.

During his time in the RAF Robert was trained on several aircraft types including Firefly, Tucano, Hawk, Jetstream and Hercules (both K and J model).

He flew the Hercules J model for the RAF out of Lyneham and various other places in the world and completed his time in the RAF working as a tactical flight instructor on the Hercules teaching pilots to fly at low level both by day and night in order to carry out aerial delivery missions.

After leaving the RAF, Bob joined British Airways where he now flies 747s as a co-pilot.

Bob instructs at Kemble during time off between flying to various destinations in the 747.

Stuart Rutter (PPL & IMC Instructor)

A graduate of the Aeros Flight Training organisation at Gloucester, Stuart has been flying locally for well over five years. He knows the local area (from the air) better than anyone and is full of surprises particularly on trial lessons...

His passion for aviation began whilst serving in the RAF.  On leaving Stuart made every effort to fulfill his dreams of becoming a pilot and now holds a UK ATPL with a Boeing 737 type rating.

After some years as a part time instructor at Kemble Stuart has now joined the PropStar Group as a Commercial Pilot and is also available as an instructor for The Flying Club Kemble.

Stuart still holds the Queens Commission as an Officer in the RAF Volunteer Reserve
